Saturday Stroll at Dreamy Draw

The pups needed some exercise, so Graham and I took them to Dreamy Draw for a sunset walk. Clouds always create such a vibrant show at sundown. And it was surprisingly breezy and cool. We've been kind of lucky this year in that it doesn't seem as unbearably hot yet. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Yoga Teaching: After Training

After yoga-teacher training I took a break from yoga.

I went to classes occasionally, but I didn't attempt to teach.

I didn't feel ready.

Then a friend suggested I teach at a gym, a thought that had never occurred to me. I figured that after teacher training I'd try to teach at the studio I was trained at, and when that didn't happen I didn't try to teach anywhere else.

I decided to give the gym a shot. I auditioned to be a fitness instructor and the following week it was time for my first class.

I really wasn't ready, but I did it anyway. I was inspired by the yoga teaching that says: "Self-possessed, resolute, act without any thought of results, open to success or failure. This equanimity is yoga." It was the motivation I needed to go through with the class.

Taking a break from yoga made me rusty. I struggled to remember common cues and I'm sure my shaky voice and sweaty forehead showed my nervousness. I didn't attempt to adjust ANYONE. I didn't even leave my mat. I doubt I looked around much.

Tonight was my 17th class. I have improved greatly, if I do say so myself. I was subbing for another instructor; there were five women in the class. But despite the low attendance I'd say it was a great class. Three students complimented me on the class, and one student, who was completely new to yoga, mentioned that she was surprised at how much of a workout it is and said she'll be back. It's such an honor to be someone's introduction to yoga -- and it's a big responsibility. I would hate to turn someone off of yoga by not tuning into the needs of the entire class.

I feel more confident in teaching now, though I know I have a lot to learn. I'll forever be foremost a student and lover of yoga.

Downtown Phoenix Sights: Rosson House

Rosson House is hauntingly beautiful. I stood in awe of it last night after my work send-off at Rose and Crown. Downtown Phoenix is full of gems, don't you think?
